Hi All,

Here’s a quick overview of the evolution of Mac OS X since its first version, Cheetah and how the branding has changed over time.

Supported Computers:
PowerMac G3, G3 B&W, G4, G4 Cube, iMac, PowerBook G3, PowerBook G4, iBook (The original "Kanga" PowerBook G3 was the only G3-based Mac not to be supported by Mac OS X).

RAM required:
• 64 MB minimum
• 128 MB recommended
• Hard Drive Space: 1.5 gigabytes
• 800 MB for the minimal install

Support the Classic environment fully for running older Mac OS 9 applications.

Mac OS X Public Beta expired and ceased to function in Spring 2001.
24th March 2001Mac OS X 10.0 - Cheetah

Supported Computers:
PowerMac G3, G3 B&W, G4, G4 Cube, iMac, PowerBook G3, PowerBook G4, iBook (The original "Kanga" PowerBook G3 was the only G3-based Mac not to be supported by Mac OS X).

RAM required:

Supported Computers:
PowerMac G3, G4, G4 Cube, iMac G3, DV, eMac, PowerBook, or iBook

RAM required:
• 128 megabytes (unofficially 64 megabytes minimum)
• Hard Drive Space: 1.5 gigabytes

Support the Classic environment fully for running older Mac OS 9 applications.
24th August 2002Mac OS X 10.2 - Jaguar

Supported Computers:
PowerMac G3, G4, early PowerMac G5, iMac, eMac, PowerBook G3 or G4, or iBook computer.

Processor Type:
PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 running at 233 MHz or higher.

RAM required:
128 megabytes (Although 256MB to 512MB is highly recommended by many people who have used Mac OS X v10.2.8 as the real amount of RAM used when only the Operating System is running is around 200MB, but it can be run with as low as 96 MB) although it will not run at full speed.

Support the Classic environment fully for running older Mac OS 9 applications.
24th October 2003Mac OS X 10.3 - Panther

Supported Computers:
• PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor (at least 233 MHz)
• Built-in USB (indicative of a New World ROM being present)

RAM required:
• At least 128 MB of RAM (512 MB recommended, 96 MB supported unofficially)
• At least 1.5 GB of available hard disk space
• CD drive
• Internet access requires a compatible service provider; iDisk requires a .Mac account

Video conferencing requires:
• 333 MHz or faster PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
• broadband Internet access (100 kbit/s or faster)
• Compatible FireWire DV camera or web camera

29th April 2005Mac OS X 10.4 - Tiger

Supported Computers:
• A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor running at 333 MHz or more
• Intel edition released as from version 10.4.4
• Built-in FireWire

RAM required:
• At least 256 MB of RAM (512 MB or 1 GB recommended)
• At least 3 GB of available hard disk space; 4 GB of disk space including the Xcode 2 Tools
• DVD drive (CD media exchange was available; offer ended 19 March 2007)

Last version of Mac OS X to support a Mac OS 9 with the Classic Environment. However, Classic Environment will not work on Intel Macs.
26th October 2007Mac OS X 10.5 - Leopard

Supported Computers:
• Flat panel iMac G4s, the first iMac G5, second iMac G5 (with the ambient light sensor), third iMac G5 (with iSight), iMac Intel Core Duo and (present day) iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, PowerBook G4, Power Mac G4, Power Mac G5, iBook G4, MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, Xserve, Xserve G5, Xserve RAID, Macintosh Server G4, and later eMac models.
• Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)
• DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)

RAM required:
• At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
• At least 9 GB of disk space available.

Leopard removes support for Classic applications.
28th August 2009Mac OS X 10.6 - Snow Leopard

Supported Computers:
• Mac computer with an Intel processor (IA-32 "Yonah" processors such as Core Solo and Core Duo will only be able to run 32-bit applications; later x86-64 architecture processors such as Core 2 will also be able to run 64-bit applications)
• DVD drive (also accessible via Remote Disc) or external USB or FireWire DVD drive for installation.

RAM required:
• 1 GB of RAM
• 5 GB of free disk space

Snow Leopard does not support PowerPC-based Macs, although PowerPC applications are supported via Rosetta, which is now an optional install.
